Latest jobsItalian giant Eni has hit the jackpot off Angola, with the Sangos-1 wildcat, the first probe sunk in Block 15/06, tapping a 127-metre oil column.
The well, drilled to a total depth of 3343 metres in water depths of 1349 metres, hit the oil column in Miocene sands with high permeability, Eni said.
Eni - which forked out $900 million for operatorship of the block in Angola's 2006 round - said that the well produced excellent quality 29 API degree oil in greater quantities than expected during production tests.
It added that the field dimensions and results are better than estimated, but would not provide further details.
Up to eight wells are planned for the block in the period running to 2011. Eni can extend the licence by a further three years, provided it sinks an extra three wells.
Eni operates Block 15/06 with a 35% stake. Sonangol is the block's licensee. The other partners of the contractor group are Sonangol Pesquisa e Producao (15%), SSI Fifteen (20%), Total (15%), Falcon Oil (5%), Petrobras (5%) and StatoilHydro (5%).
