West Seahorse-3 hits depth

By Upstream staff

Sydney-based 3D Oil said its West Seahorse-3 well had reached total depth of 1810 metres in the Bass Strait and had detected signs of hydrocarbons in the targeted Latrobe Group sediments.

3D said wireline logs were being run and samples taken to evaluate the shows. It said it expected to case the well and suspend it as a potential future producer.

The well, on the Vic/P57 permit off Victoria, is testing updip sections of the Latrobe Group sediments targeted in the original West Seahorse-1 well drilled in 1981.

The well is being sunk by the jack-up rig West Triton.

The original West Seahorse-1 well flowed 1800 barrels per day of oil from the uppermost interval of the Latrobe Group. However, 3D said more recent interpretations suggested the West Seahorse could be larger than originally thought.

3D operates the Vic/P57 permit with a 100% stake.
