Melbourne-based 3D Oil said preliminary logging results from the West Seahorse-3 well in the Bass basin off Victoria showed a eight-metre column of oil in the targeted N1 zone of the Latrobe Group reservoir sediments.
3D said the oil was struck close to prognosis at a depth of 1401 true vertical depth (1562 metres measured depth) with the lowest oil at 1409 metres.
The company said the N1 zone showed good reservoir quality with porosity of about 24%.
However, 3D said the other targeted Latrobe zones were struck lower than expected and contained no recoverable oil, although the sands showed good reservoir properties.
The company said it would complete logging of the well, on the Vic/P57 offshore permit, and expected to suspend the well as a future producer.
The well, on the Vic/P57 permit off Victoria, is testing updip sections of the Latrobe Group sediments targeted in the original West Seahorse-1 well drilled in 1981.
The well is being sunk by the jack-up rig West Triton.
3D operates the Vic/P57 permit with a 100% interest.
