Keppel snags new Ensco semisub gig

By Upstream staff

Singapore-based rig builder Keppel Fels has bagged a $512 million order from Ensco International for an ultra deep-water semi-submersible drilling rig - its fifth consecutive order from the US drilling contractor.

The semisub - the fifth Ensco 8500 series unit Keppel fels has on its order book - is due for delivery in the second half of 2011.

Ensco boss Daniel Rabun said: “We see the deepwater market as a significant catalyst for our future growth, and we are expanding our deep-water fleet to meet the sustained market demand."

The new semisub will be capable of drilling in up to 8500 feet of water. Her features will include a 2 million pound quad derrick, offline pipe handling capability, 35,000 foot drilling capacity, and station keeping capabilities meeting DP2 requirements.
