Thai producer PTT Exploration & Production (PTTEP) is sending a relief package worth 6 million baht ($188,884) in an effort to alleviate the hardship of the Burmese people who have been devastated by Cyclone Nargis.

PTTEP has prepared diesel oil, food, portable water, towels, roofing sheets, hammers and nails that will be flown to Yangoon today.

The Thai giant wishes to see the situation returning to normal as quickly as possible which is why it joins hands with the Ministry of Energy to give assistance to the people there, said the company’s chief executive Anon Sirisaengtaksin.

Nargis slammed into the south and centre of the country on Saturday. The country's ruling military junta has said the death toll currently stands at a minimum of 22,000 people dead, with a further 41,000 missing.

The junta, known for the brutal repression of its people, has said it would accept international help.

Aid agencies have estimated that as many as 1 million people may be without shelter after their homes were torn down by the winds or washed away in the flooding that left a carpet of mud when it receded.

PTTEP’s natural gas production in the Gulf of Mataban was not affected by the cyclone, both the Yetagun and Yadana projects continue to produce natural gas as usual, said the company. M9 where PTTEP is the operator, was not affected either, because it is only at the development stage and there were no activities at the time of the cyclone.
