Latest jobsBrazil aims to bring the potentially massive Carioca field on stream in 2010, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said today, adding that the country wants to join Opec.
In an interview with German weekly magazine Der Spiegel, published today, Lula confirmed that the deep-water Carioca field holds "immense" oil reserves.
"We have the know-how needed to exploit them," the magazine quoted him as saying.
"We want to begin test drilling in March and start pumping oil from 2010," he added. "Brazil will then become a large oil exporter. We want to join Opec and try to make oil cheaper."
Haroldo Lima, the head of Brazil's National Petroleum Agency last month cited data from state-run oil company Petrobras which showed the Carioca field reserves at 33 billion barrels of oil equivalent. Petrobras has not confirmed the figure, saying further appraisal work is needed before it will release reserves figures for the discovery.
