Bolivia threatens to nationalise gas fields

News wires

Bolivian President Evo Morales said he's preparing a decree to nationalise oil and gas fields in case foreign companies fail to invest in them.

Morales announced in a speech in Cochabamba yesterday that he would take back the areas for YPF Bolivianos, the country's state-owned energy company, if other companies did not invest within a certain amount of time, Spanish news agency EFE reported, said Bloomberg.

Morales did not specify which companies would be affected, said AFP news agency.

Spain's Repsol YPF, the U.K.'s BP and Brazil's Petrobras are among the foreign energy companies that operate in Bolivia.
