TransCanada seeks new regulator
Calgary-based TransCanada has asked the country's federal energy regulator to oversee the company's provincially regulated Alberta natural-gas pipeline system so that it can expand the gathering lines outside the province.
The company filed an application with the National Energy Board asking the regulator to take over jurisdiction of its Alberta system, which gathers more than 10 billion cubic feet of gas per day from the province's producers.
The switch allows the company to expand the system outside the province and to tap growing gas production from northeastern British Columbia while offsetting declining output in Alberta, said Reuters.
The company expects to retain the tolling system on the line that sees producers pay a set rate depending on where their operations are located, instead of paying a distance-based toll.
The Alberta government supports the plan and the company expects the regulatory switch will take 18 months, said Reuters.
