Palawan pair kick-start SC 54

By Upstream staff

Australia’s Nido Petroleum said joint venture partner Kairiki Energy has kicked off operations in Service Contract 54 in the Palawan basin off the Philippines with a site survey programme as it gears up to drill two wells later this year.

The survey will also cover the deeper water Gindara prospect which will be drilled next year, Nido said in a statement.

In total, eight areas will be surveyed for potential hazards and shallow gas with both analogue and digital grids to evaluate the sea bed and subsurface as possible drilling sites.

The site survey vessel Baruna Jaya has been contracted through Fugro Survey and the work is scheduled to take four weeks, depending on weather conditions.

The SC 54 prospect covers 5376 square kilometres with water depths between 50 and 800 metres. The blocks includes shallow-water pinnacle reefs, deep-water carbonate structures as well as submarine fans and channel systems.

Nido added that the floating production, storage and offloading unit has moved back to the Galoc field after Typhoon Fengshen rocked the Philippines and is set to be plugged in today. Once reconnection has been made, a full systems safety and integrity check will be carried out prior to first oil production.

Nido holds a 22.28% interest in the field.
