Norwegian operator StatoilHydro has reported hitting gas during drilling in production licence 395 in the Barents Sea, while drilling in its PL 283 and ConocoPhillip’s drilling in PL 273 proves unfruitful.
In PL 395, the drilling of wildcat 7226/2-1, situated 200 kilometres north of North Cape and the first well to be drilled in the licence, proved gas in sandstones from the Middle Triassic Age. Further evaluation needs to be carried out to determine the size of the discovery.
The well was drilled using the Polar Pioneer drilling rig to a vertical depth of 2992 metres and a water depth of 347 metres.
In PL 283, wildcat well 660/8-2, situated 320 kilometres west of Sandnessjon, drilled using the Transocean Leader, came up dry for StatoilHydro. The well is the second to be drilled in the licence.
Meanwhile operator ConocoPhillips' drilling of well 2/9-4 in PL 273 also came up dry. The well, which lies 25 kilometres east of the Valhall, was drilled using the Maersk Gallant and is the first to be drilled in the licence.
