Nice and icy: Greenland
Cairn targets Greenland frontier
UK-based explorer Cairn Energy has taken stakes in two frontier exploration licences off southern Greenland.
Its exploration-focused unit Capricorn has been awarded a 92% operating stake in the Cape Farewell 1 and 2 blocks.
Greenland's state-run Nunaoil holds the remaining 8% interest in the blocks.
In a statement, Cairn said the blocks cover a total of 20, 072 square kilometres in water depths ranging from 50 metres to 2200 metres.
Each block has a seismic acquisition obligation in the first phase of the exploration period, with Cairn adding that Capricorn will shoot about 1780 kilometres of 2D seismic over the blocks.
Capricorn also holds interests in the central (low Arctic) and southern (sub Arctic) sectors of the west Greenland basin.
