Green responsibility: Alberta wants to cut water use in oil sands production

A new draft directive targeting water management in the oil sands of northern Alberta, Canada, proposes to reduce fresh water use by 220.5 million barrels in a decade.
The directive, spearheaded by the Alberta Energy Resources and Conservation Board (ERCB) and Alberta Environment, proposes new requirements for the measurement, reporting and use of water in thermal oil sands operations.
"Managing our water wisely is critical. Albertans expect us to ensure the environment is protected and that we are developing the oil sands responsibly," said Alberta's Environment Minister Rob Renner.
