Up: Burgos gas production rises to record high in May
Burgos gas output hits record in May
Mexican state oil monopoly Pemex said natural gas production from the Burgos basin of northeastern Mexico reached a record 1.532 billion cubic feet per day in late May.
While Pemex has been struggling with falling crude oil production caused by the sharp decline of the giant offshore Cantarell fields, natural gas production has been rising, reaching a record 7.359 billion cubic feet per day last December.
Burgos, which covers an area of 50,000 square kilometres in the states of Tamaulipas, Coahuila and Nuevo Leon, is Mexico's principal producing area for non-associated gas, or gas not produced from crude oil deposits.
Pemex said that to date, 6675 wells have been drilled in Burgos, of which 2771 are currently in operation, said a Dow Jones Newswire report.
The state company said it plans to invest 30 billion pesos (US$2.3 billion) this year in the region, with plans to drill 32 exploratory wells and 469 development wells.
Pemex's crude production, meanwhile, has been steadily declining since reaching a record 3.38 million barrels per day in 2004.
In the first four months of this year, Pemex produced 2.66 million bpd of crude.
