Russia tells Belarus to pay up
Russia's gas export monopoly Gazprom has demanded Belarus pay a total of $230 million it claims the former Soviet state owes it for gas, according to reports.
Russian news agency cited the Russian embassy in Minsk as the source for its story.
The move marks another escalation in a trade war between the two states after Russia banned some Belarussian milk imports and Minsk retaliated by imposing strict customs controls on main roads to Russia, the Interfax report added..
Russia supplies a quarter of Europe's gas needs mainly via the territory of Ukraine but also via Belarus, which is a key transit route for Russian gas to Germany and Poland.
