Heerema to build Angola yard
Dutch offshore vessel owner Heerema will set up a $160 million yard in Angola to support its pipeline work for BP’s new deep-water projects.
The yard will be built in conjunction with local contractor Cembir Maritime Construction in the Porto Amboim district in the South Kwanza province, south of the capital Luanda, Lloyd’s List reported, citing local media.
Heerema Marine Contractors signed an agreement with BP for the engineering, procurement, construction and installation of deep-water seabed infrastructure for a host of new oil developments in Block 31, off Luanda.
A HMC spokeswoman confirmed the company would set up a base in Angola to assist its offshore operations. She said the offshore work included laying oil and gas pipelines using the pipelay semi-submersible vessel Balder.
The new yard would be used to store pipelines and load them on to platform supply vessels during offshore installation periods.
HMC has appointed a new director to focus on the Angolan project. Michel Hendriks was promoted from manager of procurement.
HMC has three semi-submersible vessels that are used for laying pipelines and heavy lift operations. Balder is working in the Gulf of Mexico, while Thialf and Hermod are in the North Sea, the spokeswoman said.
