All systems go at Kashagan

The first phase of Kazakhstan's huge Kashagan oilfield in the Caspian Sea will be 72% complete by the end of this year, with first oil due in 2012, the project operator said today.

"Phase one is currently at the construction phase and should reach the 72% threshold of completion at the end of 2009," Reuters quoted Pierre Offant, managing director of North Caspian Operating Company, saying at an energy conference.

Dow Jones quoted Offant as saying that feasibility studies on the second phase of the field's development are now under way.

"First oil is expected in 2012," he said.
