Ecopetrol thumped by price slump
Colombian state-run producer Ecopetrol saw its net income plunge in the third quarter as sales fell more than 26% on lower crude oil prices.
Net income for the quarter plunged to 1.19 trillion pesos ($633.8 million) from 3.93 trillion pesos in the previous year.
Total sales were 7.37 trillion pesos, down 26.1% from last year's $.97 trillion last year, on the back of lower oil prices.
Ecopetrol recorded non-operating loss of 588.9 billion pesos in the quarter, compared to a non-operating income of $1.38 trillion pesos.
The loss was due primarily to the effect of the Colombian peso's revaluation during the third quarter on the dollar denominated investments in the company's financial portfolio that generated a book net loss of 291 billion pesos, against a net profit of 1.26 trillion pesos last year.
Operating profit for the quarter amounted to 2.22 trillion pesos, down 44.6% from 4.02 trillion pesos in the prior year.
