OGX scores big in Campos
Brazilian player OGX Oil & Gas has hit a 170-metre oil column in a well on Block BM-C-41, apparently giving credence to the player's belief that there is a new oil province in the southern sector of Brazil's prolific Campos basin.
The company said in a statement that it identified an oil bearing interval in the aptian section of the 1-OGX-2A-RJS well, drilled in shallow waters in the southern sector of the basin.
OGX said that oil shows in the cuttings and log analysis of the well indicate an oil column of 170 metres and net pay of around 50 metres.
The reservoirs are conglomerates, sandstones and carbonates, with up to 20% porosity.
OGX-2A is still drilling ahead, with OGX hoping to hit further targets.
The company's general executive officer Paulo Mendonca said: "Our results so far give us further confidence that we have found a new oil province in the southern part of Campos basin."
The well lies about 77 kilometres off Rio de Janeiro coast in water depths of about 130 metres.
Diamond Offshore's semi-submersible rig Ocean Ambassador is drilling the well, which spudded on 22 October.
