Written off: smoke rises from the West Atlas and the Montara wellhead platform
Montara blaze totals West Atlas
Seadrill's insurers have written off the West Atlas jack-up drilling rig, after the unit was engulfed in a fire at the Montara wellhead platform, off north-west Australia, last month.
Upstream understands the two-year-old jack-up was insured for about $200 million.
Seadrill, which has started assessing the damage to the jack-up's superstructure and drilling package, is responsible for removing the crippled unit from the field.
Seadrill said it did not know low long it would take to remove the jack-up from the field.
A Seadrill spokeswoman was not immediately available for comment.
