Peritus joins offshore engineering race

A new global subsea and floating systems engineering house has been launched to compete against leading incumbents like JP Kenny and Intec Engineering.

Peritus International has set up three regional offices in Houston to cater to the Americas region; in London to pursue projects in Europe, Africa and the Middle East; and in Perth as an Asia-Pacific base.

The company is led by chief executive Steve Hindmarsh, most recently an executive with Intec Engineering, latterly IntecSea, and the two other founding directors Chris Tam and Graham Taylor are also ex-Intec.

Peritus aims to provide advanced engineering and project management services for oil companies operating in “difficult and deep-water environments”, said Hindmarsh.

The company will offer a full range of engineering services from conceptual to detailed design, and provide project management too.

Peritus is a Latin word meaning expertise, and Hindmarsh said the name reflects the experience and wisdom of the new company.

The co-founders believe there is a need in the oil and gas market for a new independent engineering company with skills and resources in hostile marine areas.

“We’ve brought together some of the best people in the business¿to specifically cater to oil and gas developments in remote, hostile and deep water environments,” said Hindmarsh.

“As more accessible oil and gas deposits are depleted, there will be a real need for our area of expertise”.

The new company’s major shareholder is Australian oil and gas contractor Clough, which will enable Peritus to operate as an independent business, and to utilise customised versions of Clough’s proven project management and financial systems, said Hindmarsh.

As well as being the chief executive, Hindmarsh will head up Peritus’ operation in Perth; Tam will lead the Houston operation, and Taylor will be in charge in the UK.

Hindmarsh is confident the new company will convince oil companies that it has the resources, quality and skill to match their requirements.

“We have people with decades of experience¿ and we expect to get a positive response (from oil company clients), but of course they will want to see assurances of that early on.”
