Sui gas field rocket attack

No one hurt as tribes blamed for Pakistan barrage

By Upstream staff

At least 24 rockets were fired on a gas field operated by state-run Pakistan Petroleum Limited today, damaging pipelines but without causing any injuries.

Officials said they suspected tribesmen were behind the attack in the Sui region in Baluchistan province, about 700 kilometres south-west of Islamabad. Tribal chiefs often fight for their share of benefits from exploration in the gas-rich Sui region, Reuters reported.

Officials said today's attack involved the highest number of rockets fired in a single day in recent months. "There were no casualties but pipelines from the three wells were damaged in the attack," a local official added.

Security for oil and gas companies in Baluchistan has long been a cause of concern for the government and operators. The province is awash with weapons, mostly brought from neighbouring Afghanistan during its long years of war.
