Alve assault for Statoil

Appraisal well spudded on field off Norway

By Upstream staff

Statoil spudded an appraisal well yesterday on the Alve gas and condensate discovery off Norway, close to the Norne field.

"We're hoping to establish that the field is considerably larger than has already been proven," said Knut Grindstad, Statoil's exploration manager for the Halten/Nordland cluster. "In our view, there's a good chance that possible additional resources in Alve will be oil."

Statoil said more oil or gas has to be proven to achieve a profitable development at Alve.

The well is being drilled by the drillship West Navigator and is scheduled for completion in around six weeks. The drillship will then move on to drill an exploration well in the Halten/Nordland area.
