A spokesman for the BG subsidiary told Upstream a risk assessment and was currently underway – standard practice to ensure the safety of people in the area.
“As soon as it is safe, it is likely that the well will be flooded with water to stop the gas flow and the damage repaired,” he said.
A 5 centimetre crack in the pipeline leading from the well head occurred during set up operations for a drilling rig at the field, located 20 kilometres south-east of the town of Miles in Queensland.
The company has cordoned off the site, which was land owned by a farmer, and work was underway to repair the leak, QGC senior vice president Jim Knudsen said in an announcement
He said the leak was not considered dangerous beyond three metres from the well head and it posed no significantly adverse environmental or health impact.
Repairs were expected to take “a couple of days,” the company said, with the site being monitored while an investigation into the cause of the incident was underway.
QGC had notified Queensland emergency services, the landholder and the State Government’s regulator, it said.
