The US independent hit 50 feet of gas pay at the well in the eastern Gulf, Chuck Meloy, senior vice president of worldwide operations announced at the Jefferies Global Energy Conference in Houston.
Meloy said the gas pay was of "high quality".
The well will be tied back to the Independence Hub and the company expects first gas in 2012, Meloy said on Thursday.
Located in 8000 feet of water on Mississippi Canyon block 920, some123 miles southeast of Biloxi, Mississippi, the Independence Hub is the deepest production platform ever installed and also the world's largest offshore natural gas processing facility.
Natural gas production through the Hub began in 2007, from the first of 15 subsea wells located in 10 anchor fields.
