Libya launch for Total

By Upstream staff

French oil giant Total will start producing first oil from its delayed Al Jurf oil development off Libya imminently, a company executive said.

"It's starting today or tomorrow," Christophe de Margerie, Total's president of E&P, said of the 40,000 barrels-per-day Al Jurf oilfield in block 137.

Total launched the development of structure B of the Al Jurf field, located about 100 kilometres offshore, at the start of 2001 with an aim to begin production early this year from a floating production, storage and offloading vessel. The schedule was put back to September after Total hit some dry wells.

De Margerie also said Total hoped the rules of "usual competition" for oil deals in Libya would be maintained if sanctions are lifted on the oil-rich north African country and US companies are allowed to return there. "I hope the geopolitical aspects will be kept at bay," he said.

Libya is close to seeing an end of United Nations sanctions imposed after the 1988 bombing of a Pan Am airliner over the Scottish town of Lockerbie after it reached a deal to compensate families of the victims of the bombing.
