Capacity to increase by over 100 terajoules a day

More punch for Oz pipeline

By Russell Searancke

The owners of Western Australia's mighty Dampier-to-Bunbury onshore gas pipeline have committed to an A$430 million expansion of the 1600-kilometre-long line.

The owners - Diversified Utility & Energy Trusts, Alinta and Alcoa - said the expansion involves the addition of eight compressor units and over 200 kilometres of pipeline. This will increase the existing firm capacity of the pipeline by over 100 terajoules a day (95 million cubic feet per day).

The owners' executive chairman Stuart Hohnen said the decision to expand honoured commitments given by the owners when the pipeline was purchased from Epic Energy in October 2004.

The additional capacity, which is fully contracted, is expected to become available over the next 20 months.

The expansion project, which represents one of the largest construction programmes to be undertaken in the state during this period, will be project managed by Alinta Network Services under an operational services agreement with DBP - the owners.

The pipeline is the only means of transporting gas from fields in the offshore North West Shelf to industrial, commercial and residential customers in the Perth region and to the mid and south-west of the state.
