NEG makes California find

By Upstream staff

The Nahabedian Exploration Group (NEG) has encountered about 1000 feet of gross hydrocarbon pay at its Jack Hamar 1-1 well in the San Joaquin basin, California.

Analysis of drilling results and electric logs collected after the well reached its total depth of 9730 feet indicated the presence of hydrocarbons in the Monterey Shale and Echegoin formations that are prolific producers in California.

Australian partner Orchard Petroleum said that several intervals have been identified for further detailed testing and evaluation including a secondary objective in a shallow gas-bearing interval that will most likely require a separate appraisal well.

It added that testing would be aimed at identifying the best approach to maximise potential production and that testing of the multiple intervals would not take place until additional wells have been drilled.

Orchard executive chairman Steve Graves said: "The hydrocarbon Monterey formation and the shallower Echegoin section that we have encountered appear to be of satisfactory quality and are likely extensive enough to suggest that gross hydrocarbon volume sin this well will not be the limiting factor in the scale of success."

Participants in Jack Hamar 1-1 in the Lost Hills area of the San Joaquin basin are operator NEG (50%), Orchard (25%) and Nuenco (25%).
