By Upstream staff

French energy group Total said today it is aiming to cut gas flaring at its installations around the world by half by 2012.

The group had already decided a zero flare policy in 2000 for new installations.

Total joined the Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership (GGFR) in March 2004.

The GGFR was set up under an initiative by the World Bank as a public/private partnership to support efforts to use flared gas.

Total said that despites significantly higher levels of production, the amounts of gas flared at its operated facilities fell by 40% between 1998 and 2005.
