In its latest study, the Canadian Energy Research Institute (Ceri) found greenhouse gas emissions from existing oil sands projects — both in-situ and mining operations — will continue to increase as production grows. It forecasts current emissions will grow to 95 megatonnes by 2025 from the current 70 megatonnes.

“Increasing production in this sector makes the meeting of international commitments increasingly difficult, and thus there is interest in reducing the amount of greenhouse gas es emitted to extract bitumen from the oil sands and generate synthetic crude oil,” said the study.
