Well that may not be so far off if a group of scientists from the Swiss Federal Laboratories have anything to do with it. A chemically-modified nanocellulose sponge, which is capable of absorbing oil and then remains floating on the surface to be recovered, has been developed by the researchers.
They, in collaboration with scientists from the University of Bordeaux, have now developed a material which separates oil from water.
