Aker Solutions has secured a preliminary agreement to deliver a carbon capture facility at the Norcem cement plant in southern Norway that is set to be developed as part of the Equinor-led Northern Lights project.

The local contractor is now in line for an engineering, procurement and construction contract for the proposed capture, liquefaction and intermediate storage facility at the Brevik factory, contingent on an investment decision by the government later this year.

If realised, the planned full-scale demonstration project would be the first large-scale carbon capture facility within the cement producing industry that accounts for between 5% and 7% of global CO2 emissions annually.
