South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries has obtained approvals for its conceptual design for a wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV) from three global ship quality assurance and risk management companies.

The three companies are ABS from the United States, Norway’s DNV and UK peer Lloyd’s Register.

A conceptual design refers to the basic concept and characteristics of the vessel before confirming its specifications and required technologies.

The WTIV, an original design by Samsung, will be equipped with dual-fuel engines using liquefied natural gas and solid oxide fuel cells - energy conversion devices that generate electricity.

The vessel could cut up to 50% of carbon dioxide emissions compared with diesel-propelled vessels, the company said.

By coming up with its own WTIV design, Samsung will free itself from reliance on internatiolnal engineers for such vessels, thereby reducing costs and having freedom to choose onboard equipment. The conractor late with year teamed up with compatriot Hyosung Heavy Industries to jointly develop technology for the jacking system, reported Business Korea.

Samsung more than a decade ago won the first order for a WTIV among South Korean offshore and marine yards and, to date, it has completed construction of three such facilities at its Geoje Island yard, according to national news agency Yonhap.

Orders for WTIVs are estimated to increase by 44% to 23 vessels by 2023 compared to 16 units in 2020, Yonhap claimed, citing Clarkson Research Services.
