OPINION: Since becoming BP’s chief executive in February 2020, Bernard Looney has often appeared a step ahead of his counterparts when it comes to the energy transition.

Under Looney’s leadership, BP stole a march on its competitors when it unveiled 20 months ago a bold new strategy to transform the oil and gas giant into an “integrated energy company”.

This included pledges to boost annual spending on low-carbon energy and to cut oil and gas production.
