US supermajor ExxonMobil has advised shareholders to vote against a proposal for the company to reduce its Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, drawing backlash from some activist shareholder groups.
The proposal calls for ExxonMobil to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of its operations and energy products to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.
ExxonMobil’s response to the proposal reflects growing division among oil and gas producers over whether the sector should assume responsibility for their Scope 3 emissions, instead focusing on Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
