China’s upstream giant PetroChina is setting the pace for a large scale deployment of carbon capture and storage technology at its mature onshore fields, hoping the new plans will help cut CO2 emissions by using the gas for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) operations.

Industry officials said China is home to massive undeveloped oil volumes held in low permeability reservoirs, which provides a huge market for CO2-EOR applications.
