Shallow-water offshore oil and gas infrastructure in the US Gulf of Mexico emits significantly more methane than onshore oil and gas operations in the Permian basin, a new study has found.

Carbon Mapper, a non-profit organisation that facilitates mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, used Arizona State University’s Global Airborne Observatory to pinpoint methane emissions from a height of 18,000 feet.
