Never lacking for innovation, Scandinavia can now boast what may be the world’s first low carbon large-scale manufactured toilet paper.

Swedish company Essity Hygiene & Health is rolling out the new product from its Edet Bruk tissue mill north of Gothenburg, using biogas and renewable energy in place of natural gas to manufacture the tissue, available to consumers under the Lotus brand.

Essity said the switch will reduce the plant’s fossil carbon dioxide emissions by about 9000 tonnes per annum.
