Offshore drilling contractor Transocean said Tuesday that it will drill one carbon dioxide injection well and a sidetrack for another CO2 injection well drilled in 2020 for the Northern Lights carbon transport and storage project in Norway.

The work will be performed later this year by the semi-submersible drilling rig Transocean Enabler as part of its current drilling contract with Norway’s Equinor. The harsh environment semisub is under contract to Equinor until 2024.

Janelle Daniel, Transocean’s vice president of human resources, sustainability and communications said: “We are proud to participate in this important carbon capture and storage project in support of the EU’s energy policy and climate objectives.
