Eni-connected Vaar Energi is considering a power from shore project involving a pair of floaters for its Balder field in the North Sea in what one expert said is likely to prove a challenge for the company.

The plan from the company — which is owned by the Italian major and Norwegian investment player HitecVision — could see it supplying the Balder and Jotun floating production, storage and offloading units with power from shore.

Electrification of weatherwaning vessels is considered extremely challenging, due to challenges related to transmission of power through the ship’s turret.
