Australian regulator the National Offshore Petroleum Safety & Environmental Management Authority (Nopsema) has told Norway’s Equinor that it must modify and resubmit its environmental plan for drilling the Stromlo wildcat in the environmentally sensitive Great Australian Bight.

Equinor wants to drill the Stromlo-1 well in Block EPP 39 at the end of 2020 or in early 2021. The prospect lies in a water depth of 2239 metres, 372 kilometres off South Australia.

Equinor must now provide Nopsema with further information about matters relating to consultation, source control, oil spill risk and matters protected under Part 3 of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
