The UK Supreme Court delivered a ground-breaking ruling on Friday that allows Nigerian communities to sue supermajor Shell in the English courts over oil pollution.

A Shell spokesperson described the court’s decision as “disappointing.”

Friday’s judgement is also significant because it has wider implications for claims against multinational parent companies whose subsidiaries cause harm to the environment through their group operations, said law firm Leigh Day, which represented the Ogale and Bille communities in the Niger Delta.
