Italian explorer Eni has quit South Africa, leaving TotalEnergies and Shell as the only majors active in the nation’s promising waters.

The Milan-based player had operated Exploration Right (ER) 235 off the coast of KwaZulu-Natal and, before the Covid pandemic, was making plans to drill multiple exploration probes on the acreage.

However, according to the latest information from the Petroleum Agency of South Africa — which regulates E&P activities — Sasol is now the only company in the block.
