Malaysia’s national oil company Petronas has laid out plans to spud its maiden exploration well offshore Brazil next year, as it follows in the footsteps of other operators in search of pre-salt riches in the ultra-deepwater portion of the prolific Campos basin.

Petronas submitted an environmental study to federal regulator Ibama seeking a licence to drill as many as three wells in Block C-M-715, in the fringe of the pre-salt polygon, in the Campos basin.

The proposed campaign calls for the drilling of the Foca-1 wildcat in about 3060 metres of water, with operations scheduled to take place in June 2023.
