Malaysia’s national oil company Petronas is making preparations to spud its maiden exploration well in Brazilian waters as an operator early next year, targeting hydrocarbons in the ultra-deepwater portion of the prolific Campos basin.

Petronas acquired blocks C-M-661 and C-M-715 in October 2019 in Brazil’s 16th licensing round and committed to shoot seismic and drill one well in each licence.

Petronas told Upstream that the programme is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2023 with drilling of the Mola-1 wildcat in C-M-661, to be followed by the Foca-1 prospect in C-M-715.
