Calgary-based Touchstone Exploration has flowed light oil from a new play onshore Trinidad that offers major encouragement for other drilling activity in the region.

The Royston-1 exploration well was spudded on 12 August in Touchstone's Ortoire block and was drilled to a total depth of 10,700 feet.

As expected, it successfully intercepted a pair of gas zones, but on bieng drilled deeper it surprisingly hit a new oil pay.

Drilling samples and open hole wireline logs indicated the probe hit a significant turbidite formation — called Herrera — with a total potential thickness of more than 1000 feet.
