China’s CNOOC International is abandoning a high-profile wildcat it has been drilling offshore eastern Canada.

The Pelles A-71 exploration well spudded on 30 April and, as of last week, was in the process of being abandoned, according to the Canada-Newfoundland & Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board, which regulates upstream activities in the province’s waters.

The probe is located in Flemish Pass basin acreage south of Equinor’s Bay du Nord project and east of a licence where ExxonMobil’s drilled its Harp wildcat last year.
