The US government has unveiled plans to host a new offshore oil and gas lease sale in the Gulf of Mexico area this quarter, following a successful auction in federal waters that took place in late 2021.

The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) issued this week its final supplemental environmental impact statement for lease sales 259 and 261, both set to feature hundreds of tracts in the Gulf of Mexico’s continental shelf.

BOEM has proposed the 29 March date to organise Lease Sale 259, while adding the Lease Sale 261 is set to be conducted by the end of September.
