The latest exploration well offshore Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada, has been abandoned after failing to find commercial volumes of hydrocarbons.
This failure off ExxonMobil’s Gale N-66 well means that the last successful exploration probe to be drilled in the province’s waters was Equinor’s Cambriol discovery in September 2020.
Subsequent exploration wells drilled by ExxonMobil (Hampden and Gale), BP (Ephesus), CNOOC International (Pelles) and Equinor (Sitka), have failed to find viable amounts of oil and gas, although the Sitka probe did not hit target depth and will likely be re-drilled in 2024.
