US supermajor ExxonMobil has begun a fresh wildcatting programme in the prolific Stabroek block offshore Guyana, targeting hydrocarbons in the same area where it has been making gigantic discoveries.

ExxonMobil has spudded the Banjo-1 exploration well with the Noble Corporation drillship Noble Sam Croft, according to updated information from Guyana’s Maritime Administration Department.

As with all other wells drilled in Stabroek, Banjo-1 — which is being drilled approximately 173 kilometres from the Guyanese coast — was named after a species of fish.
