ExxonMobil has expanded its upstream presence in Egypt by picking up an additional offshore block, giving further momentum to Egyptian efforts to boost its reserves in its gas-prone Mediterranean waters.

The supermajor made its debut in Egypt last February when it won the hotly contested North East El Amriya Offshore block in the Nile Delta offered by state-run Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (Egas) under its 2018 bid round.

ExxonMobil said it has now been awarded an additional block - North Marakia Offshore - located five miles offshore Egypt’s northern coast in the Herodotus basin.
